13. Life without “Jersey Shore”
MTV announced in August that the cast of guidos and guidettes would be going their separate ways. Yet, in the same breath, announced two spin-off shows: The Pauly D Project and Snooki & JWoww. Just when America thought it would become the show that never dies, MTV announced the renewal of Snooki & JWoww—but NOT The Pauly D Project. It might take a while, but let’s hope this is the final descent into oblivion for the Jersey Shore.
12. “Girl Meets World” returns
Cory and Topanga are back together again after thirteen years—and they’re bringing a teenage daughter with them. In their huge November announcement, the Disney Channel announced the debut of “Girl Meets World,” a spin-off of the beloved ‘90s show focusing on the daughter of the Cory and Topanga Matthews. Though many have been skeptical about “Girl Meets World” living up to its predecessor, both Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage have assured fans the show will not be “cheesy.”
11. Royal baby
Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are expecting their first child. The royal baby is due in the summer of 2013, according to a prediction from the palace in early December. More importantly, keep an eye on these royal baby Twitter accounts.
10. Fleetwood Mac reunites
Despite getting together for another tour only three years prior, Fleetwood Mac’s 2013 Reunion Tour has caused quite a stir in music circles. The gargantuan 34-date tour begins in April and covers much of North America, with possible Australian and European dates to follow.
9. Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary episode
Whovians around the world are counting down the days until November 23, 2013—50 years to the day of the pilot episode of their beloved series. Web pages abound with theories as to what direction Chief Writer Steven Moffat will take the monumental episode in. Moffat himself has said that writing the episode has been “half exciting and half absolutely terrifying.”
8. H&M goes green
In early December, H&M announced the would begin a worldwide clothing collection service starting in February 2013. Customers will hand in used garments to H&M stores and, in return, receive a 15% discount on one new item of their choice. A similar initiative was started by M&S, a U.K. clothing company, who reported over 2 million recycled garments in only a year.
7. “Anchorman 2”
Ron Burgundy is back at it again in “Anchorman: The Legend Continues.” Though some have been skeptical about the long-awaited sequel, the cast boasts almost all the original members, including fan favorites Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner. Check it out on Dec. 20.
6. Program Council hosts Life in Color (formerly Dayglow) concert
The CU campus has been abuzz since Program Council’s December announcement that they would be hosting the “World’s Largest Paint Party” at Balch Fieldhouse in February. The line-up is an EDM’s fan’s dream with Basscrooks, Seven Lions, headliner Borgore and more. Amazingly, tickets haven’t sold out yet, so get yours today.
5. KimYe’s baby
After Kanye West announced to concert-goers in Atlanta that he and girlfriend Kim Kardashian were expecting a baby, celebrity gossip sites went crazy. Kim is about 14 weeks pregnant and expecting KimYe Jr. sometime in June.
4. “The Great Gatsby” hits theaters
To be released on May 10, “The Great Gatsby” is turning out to be one of the most controversial releases of the new year. Written and directed by Baz Luhrmann of “Moulin Rouge” and “Romeo + Juliet” fame, the film will be presented in 3D and feature an unorthodox soundtrack including the likes of U2. Despite the nay-sayers, the film features a phenomenal cast, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan.
3. The “Breaking Bad” Finale
All good things must come to an end, and in the case of “Breaking Bad,” there’s no exception. Bryan Cranston has predicted the finale to be an “ugly, horrific mess,” while creator Vince Gilligan has admitted he hasn’t had the show’s finale always figured out. The series finale will air on an undisclosed date over the summer.
2. “Arrested Development” Returns
Perhaps the biggest return news of the year is that of Mitchell Hurwitz’s cult favorite, “Arrested Development.” The show will be exclusively shown on Netflix, a bold move for the shows producers. Hurwitz has said that the show will be different than before, with “each episode [dedicated] to a different character’s point of view.” (
1. Beyonce saves the Super Bowl Half-Time Show
Beyonce Knowles, recently named the “Sexiest Woman of the 21st Century,” will be performing at this year’s Super Bowl half-time show. After the lukewarm performances from Madonna in 2012 and—even worse—the Black Eyed Peas’s 2011 show, Beyonce’s performance is a welcome change to the event. The show promises everything from an introduction by her fans to a Destiny’s Child reunion performance, and is sure to be one of the best of the year.
