The CU Student Government will be holding an open forum for students to debate passing legislation that would ban the famous 4/20 celebration from occurring on campus.
Every April 20 afternoon, a haze of smoke hovers above thousands of students, Boulder residents and out-of-towners that collect on Norlin Quad. The event, which brought in a crowd of around 10,000 this past April, has received national media attention in recent years.
But after around 75 percent of students expressed concern over 4/20’s impact on the school’s reputation, (just this past year, CU was ranked the number one party school in the country by Playboy magazine) in a survey conducted by CUSG, the decision was made to discuss eliminating the occasion.
“This is the first forum of its kind,” said CUSG’s Vice President of External Affairs, Brooks Kanski. “No legislation on 4/20 has ever been passed or proposed before.”
The public forum, which was organized by the CUSG Executives elected last spring, will encourage discussion between students and their representatives, as well as CU administration. A decision will be reached the following day on whether or not to pass the ban.
“It’s an opportunity for students to share their thoughts with us over 4/20 being closed this year,” Kanski said, “It’s an opportunity for us to share our reasoning with them.”
The forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 in the auditorium (room 1B20) of the Visual Arts Complex.
