CU men’s golf slips to 10th place

The poor continue to get poorer.

During the third day of action at the Big 12 Conference Championships, the CU men’s golfers moved back to 10th place after stumbling to a 13-over 293 round on Tuesday.

This season the Buffs have failed to place higher than fifth at any tournament or invitational. It doesn’t seem like the drought will end in Hutchinson, Kan. either as their three-round total of 891 is far distant from the leader-board.

No. 1 Oklahoma State, the unstated favorite, remains in a padded lead over the other two nationally ranked Big 12 teams, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 11 Texas.

Individually, senior Luke Symons posted a 2-under 68, including four birdies on the day. He is the top among Buffs and is tied for 23rd overall. After two seasons plagued by injuries, Symons continues to play well during his concluding collegiate year.

“Luke’s at the end of a very tough two years following the pair of hip surgeries and working hard to get his game back, so it was good to see him post a red number,” said coach Roy Edwards to CU Buffs.

The Buffs dwell more than 40 shots under the lead and realize a shot at extending their season is all but over. Not since 1968, as member of the Big Eight Conference, have the Buffs won a league title.

Now, heading into the final day of their last visit to the Big 12 Tournament, the golfers prepare to fight for any scraps they can get.

“The guys want to have a good finish,” Edwards said.  “[Realistically], we know that tomorrow is the last round of the year, and they’re as frustrated as we are, but are still working at it.”

Tee time for the fourth round begins at 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday.
