Opinion: You don’t need to change a thing

So the fact that I take care of myself and my body isn’t reflective of my work ethic, ideals, and healthy mindset? What about people that enjoy smoking? Should they not try to quit, just because success rates are low? Some people do need to lose weight. People to (typically) look and feel better when they’re healthy.

Considering the financial cost that obesity-related health issues have on our health care system and the millions of people who are already struggling to learn to treat their bodies with respect instead of like a trash can, it’s incredibly inappropriate for you to disparage people who are trying to change bad habits into good ones. If you have a friend that wanted to change their life for the better, and you couldn’t bring yourself to support them, that makes you inconsiderate, not morally superior.

The fact that you’re comfortable shoveling crap like pizza and Cheetos into your body without regard to the harm that it’s causing (yes, harm) doesn’t give you the right to look down upon those who want to do better than that. Yes, some foods are “good” and some foods are completely useless within our bodies.

Cheetos and fruit do not serve the same function. One provides fiber, vitamins and complex carbohydrates to fuel development and growth and maintain energy, the other provides chemicals and simple carbohydrates that spike insulin levels leading to energy crashes and eventually, diabetes. No one “needs” what Cheetos provide. Just because it’s an “opinion” article doesn’t mean you can say whatever you damn well please without factual evidence.

The messages you are sending with this piece are far more detrimental to self-esteem and health than anything I’ve seen in the media recently. If you don’t want to be healthy, fine. But don’t try to bring the rest of us down with you, please.
