A pedestrian who was fatally injured on westbound U.S. 36 Thursday night has been identified as 22-year-old CU student Transito (Tito) Eduardo Torres, according to the Coroner’s Office. Police said Friday that they suspect Torres jumped from the Table Mesa Drive overpass.
Torres, a senior women’s studies major, was hit by a Mercury Mountaineer, according to a Boulder Police Department news release. Several passengers in the SUV were sent to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The accident occurred at around 8:20 p.m., according to the news release.
Boulder Police have reason to believe Torres was hit after jumping from an overpass bridge above the highway, according to an update released by the police department Friday. Evidence has indicated that he was lying on the ground and severely injured as a result of the fall.
While at CU, Torres was a Smith Hall International Program mentor and RA, and won the “CU Proud” Award during his sophomore year, according to the fall 2008 edition of the Parents Association newsletter.
An investigation of the accident is ongoing, according to the update. The CU Independent will publish more information as it becomes available.
