After hours of deliberation, jurors in Ward Churchill’s lawsuit about whether or not he was wrongfully dismissed ruled in favor of Churchill.
Churchill sued the University of Colorado for firing him for allegedly committing academic misconduct.
Churchill claimed he was fired because of his controversial 9/11 essay, “Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens,” where he compared some of the victims of the attacks to Nazi bureaucrat Adolf Eichmann.
A decision still lies with Denver Chief District Judge Larry J. Naves on whether Ward Churchill can get his job back in a separate hearing.
CU President Bruce Benson issued a response to the verdict.
“While we respect the jury’s decision, we strongly disagree. It doesn’t change the fact that more than 20 of Ward Churchill’s faculty peers on three separate panels unanimously found he engaged in deliberate and repeated plagiarism, falsification and fabrication that fell below the minimum standards of professional conduct. The jury’s award is an indication of what they thought of the value of Ward Churchill’s claim. We will examine our legal options,” Benson said in a press release.
