The CU Club Baseball team won both games of its Saturday double-header against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
The Buffs took game one by the score of 11-3 and the second game by the tally of 10-3.
In the first game, Buffs’ pitcher Matt DeGraaf threw six innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
“All the guys played very well on the account. This is the first time we have ever even seen this team,” CU captain Joey Fulcher said.
The bats of the Buffs brought in 21 runs on the day, led by outfielder Chad Petersen, who was 4-6 on the day with two homeruns and had six RBIs.
Peterson said both pitches he took out of the yard were down in the zone, and he just put good swings on both homerun pitches.
“I wasn’t trying to hit homeruns. I just wanted to hit it up the middle,” he said “But fortunately, I felt good on both swings and drove the ball.”
The second game of the double-header featured Buffs’ pitcher Patrick Comly, who held Colorado Springs through five innings, only giving up one run.
Tied at one after five-innings, the Buffs exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-1 lead and an eventual 10-3 victory.
Peterson again was big part of the Buffs’ sixth inning of the second game against Colorado Springs.
“He got our bats going, and contributed when he needed to,” Fulcher said.
The Buffs are in a gridlock in the conference standings with Northern Colorado, but Fulcher said it will not be the Bears giving the Buffs a run for the conference championship in 2008.
“Colorado State always has a good club team,” Fulcher said, “they (Bears) have only beaten Colorado Springs, so I don’t feel Northern Colorado has been challenged.”
As far as Saturday’s game, Fulcher wanted to get more experience for some of the players on the bench.
“I wish I could have played more second-string players today,” Fulcher said. “We have a very deep roster this year and we need to play these guys, so we can keep on getting better as a whole.”
