CU improves Big 12 record to 2-0
The CU women’s tennis team is kicking off Big 12 play with two matches in three days, starting their first with a win.
After a sweep of No. 55 Kansas on Friday, the Buffs will get a chance to get their third shutout in a row on Sunday against Kansas State.
The 7-0 win against Kansas improved the Buffs’ overall record to 5-6 and 2-0 in the Big 12. They also improved their all-time record against Kansas to 14-24, winning the last seven out of nine matches against the Jayhawks.
Head coach Nicole Kenneally said the team performed well in the back-and-forth battle with the Jayhawks.
“We played through some adverse situations, and we did well,” Kenneally said. “We’re getting to where we want to be as a team.”
With the conference win, CU is now tied with No. 10 Baylor for the top spot in the Big 12.
Senior Veera Nurmi said the victory means more than just moving up in the standings.
“It’s always good to get a conference win,” Nurmi said. “We didn’t have the best start to the season, but we’ve had a couple of good wins, and that makes it more fun.”
Junior Franziska Jendrian said the team did not focus on Kansas’ No. 55 ranking.
“We don’t really care about rankings,” Jendrian said. “We play people as they come. We could play the number one team or an unranked team and we would play them the same way.”
The Buffs host the Kansas State Wildcats at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House.
Looking for their fourth win in a row, Nurmi said the Buffs are not going to underestimate anyone.
“All Big 12 (teams) are good,” Nurmi said. “We’re going to be ready for Kansas State.”
