There is a very good reason why they are called “UGGS”
Help me.
I am becoming one of those people whom I’ve hated my whole life. The bullying, snot-nosed brats – you know the type – cast and recast over generations of teenage movies as blond-haired, blue-eyed cheerleaders, jocks’ girlfriends and prom queens.
The source of my dilemma is the Ugg boot. I guess they used to be used in Australia by cowboys, surfers and other such rugged folk, before Cameron Diaz, and other such non-rugged famous folk made them a style.
The backlash that has been occurring against the Ugg boot for as long as I have known the Ugg boot to exist sort of turns the tables. If an easy-to-poke-fun-at shoe appears on the foot of a blond, snot-nosed brat, and I make fun of said snot-nosed brat, am I not imitating her?
Am I not engaging in the sort of behavior that I have regarded as unjust? Am I not stereotyping her as the sort of person who would make fun of someone? Am I not making an utter and total hypocrite out of myself?
Am I not being sexist by calling her ‘her’?
I have come up with the answer to these questions.
I don’t hate Ugg boots. I love them.
They’re the boots that I love to hate. Some people have trends that they love to follow. This might be the result of a natural instinct to fit in. Or it might transcend that and become the sort of passion, a need that is so central to one’s existence that one is willing to don an Ugg boot! Well, why shouldn’t it be okay to have a trend that you love to hate? Something for you to crusade against with a deep, visceral loathing? Like a shoe that is really, really, really, really UGLY!
Therefore, based on the premise that it is perfectly okay to show a certain taste for a particular item of clothing, it ought to be perfectly okay to show an equal and opposite distaste for any item of clothing that you so choose to hate.
Like those dead wombats on Cameron Diaz’s feet – UUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
