Buffs will seek third Conference victory Saturday
The CU football team will travel to Manhattan, Kan., this weekend to take on Kansas State University. The Buffs will look to maintain their undefeated conference record.
After the Buffs’ 43-23 win over Baylor University last Saturday, Colorado stands 2-0 in conference play and 4-2 overall.
Quarterback Cody Hawkins said winning the Oct. 13 game is important not only for conference standings, but for the season in general.
“This is the biggest game of the season for us,” Hawkins said. “Not just because it is the next game, because the next game is always the biggest game, but just this could have such an effect on the rest of the season.”
The Wildcats moved into the Top 25 at the end of September after defeating the then ranked No. 7 University of Texas(cq). After a loss to the University of Kansas last weekend, however, Kansas State is now unranked.
Hawkins said that Kansas State ranks at the top of all the teams CU has played so far this year, including the University of Oklahoma.
“Oklahoma beat Texas by a touchdown at a neutral site, and Kansas State beat Texas by 20 in Texas,” Hawkins said. “So Kansas State is easily the best team we have played so far, and they are also the next team we are playing. I would say Oklahoma and Kansas State are very comparable, and Kansas State’s defense is probably a little more aggressive than Oklahoma’s.”
Linebacker Jordon Dizon said that as a defense, Kansas State’s offense will also be tough to face. He said that while the team has shown time and time again that they can pass very effectively, the Wildcats can also run the ball extremely well.
“They picked and tore apart the Texas defense, Texas has got the top five defense in the nation, and so what they did to them, we have got to expect they are going to try to do the same to us,” Dizon said. “So we have got to bring our hard hats. We know it is going to be a great game.”
As for the offense, tailback Hugh Charles is looking for his fourth 100-yard rushing game in a row.
“I’m definitely preparing for another 100-yard game and keeping that streak going because it just makes the season even more fun,” Charles said.
The game, which has a 7:21 p.m. kickoff time, will be televised on ESPN2.
