Here’s the Campus Press sports section’s picks of the week:
Stirling Wade – Sports Editor
Middle Tennessee State 3, (8) Louisville 52
The most intriguing thing about this game will be finding out whether Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe believes in running up the score.
(9) Virginia Tech 13, (2) LSU 21
It’s a tall task for anyone to go into Baton Rouge and defeat the Tigers, even for a team as good as Virginia Tech.
(19) TCU 27, (7) Texas 28
Don’t kid yourself. TCU is really good, but Texas will be eager to beat their in-state brethren.
Miami, FL 27, (5) Oklahoma 21
I just get the sense that Miami and first year head coach Randy Shannon are in for a big-time rebounding year.
South Carolina 10, (11) Georgia 24
Sophomore QB Matthew Stafford looked really good in his 2007 debut against Oklahoma State.
(22) Boise State 16, Washington 24
Did anyone else notice that Charlie Weiss had all that success at Notre Dame with Tyrone Willingham’s players?
Colorado 16, Arizona State 30
CU’s defense didn’t look very good against CSU. Arizona State’s offense is much better.
Derek Schimmel – Sports Writer
Middle Tennessee State 10, (8) Louisville 45
Heisman hopeful Brian Brohm will continue to impress with another 4 TD passes.
(9) Virginia Tech 10, (2) LSU 28
Emotion alone isn’t enough to carry VT over a tough Tigers team in the bayou.
(19) TCU 13, (7) Texas 21
A battle of Texas powerhouses will allow the Longhorns to flex their muscle.
Miami, FL 7, (5) Oklahoma 28
Bob Stoops is a good enough coach to help stop the Hurricanes, no matter who is under center.
South Carolina 21, (11) Georgia 13
Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks will put UGA back in the doghouse.
(22) Boise State 20, Washington 17
Boise State will prove it can win on any color turf.
Colorado 28, Arizona State 20
Moving from the thin air of the Rockies to the dry air of the desert will help the Buffs mount a 4th quarter comeback.
Amanda Walck – Sports Writer
Middle Tennessee State 10, (8) Louisville 42
This game will most likely be another blow-out, just like Louisville’s opener last week against Murray State. But games like this are never certain, so the Cardinals should keep Michigan’s fate in mind.
(9) Virginia Tech 24, (2) LSU 21
The Hokies will get down to business after their emotional season opener and upset the Tigers.
(19) TCU 24, (7) Texas 28
TCU looks great this year, but Texas will still take this one on their home turf.
Miami, FL 21, (5) Oklahoma 31
If red-shirt freshman quarterback Sam Bradford can repeat his stellar performance from last week’s game against North Texas, OU should have another great game.
South Carolina 20, (11) Georgia 27
South Carolina won last week without their starting quarterback Blake Mitchell, so they should have a stronger offense when he starts on Saturday.
(22) Boise State 34, Washington 31
Boise State should win this match-up in theory, but they need to stay on their game to beat Washington and get a running start into their hard schedule.
Colorado 28, Arizona State 24
This game will be another close one. The Buffs have to step up their pass defense if they want to beat the Sun Devils.
Brad Cochi – Sports Writer
Middle Tennessee State 13, (8) Louisville 35
Forget Middle Tennessee State, no upset bug here. Brian Brohm and Louisville are just too good.
(9)Virginia Tech 21, (2) LSU 27
I’m picking with my head not my heart, Tigers by 6.
(19) TCU 14, (7) Texas 28
Two good teams from the state of Texas but the Longhorns will not take this game lightly.
Miami, FL 17, (5) Oklahoma 35
Oklahoma’s young guns will come out blazing for the second week in a row.
South Carolina 7, (11) Georgia 17
“The Ole Ball Coach” is exactly that. Old.
(22)Boise State 24, Washington 28
Here’s my…upset?
Colorado 17, Arizona State 28
Leaky pass defense and Hugh Charles’ hammie both worry me a lot.
