How to become a member of the mile high club just in time for spring break
Let the countdown begin! CU students are less than one week away from spring break. With excitement building, students are preparing to jet off to exotic destinations, let their hair down and forget about any schoolwork.
With stress and homework seeming to be miles away during break, some students may become more daring and open to experimentation, such as joining the elusive Mile High Club. The Mile High Club refers to two people engaging in a sexual activity, more commonly sexual intercourse, at an altitude of no less than 5,280 feet – a mile high above the earth – in an airplane.
Lawrence Sperry founded the club in 1916 when he was giving flying lessons to a New York socialite and things got a little too hot and heavy. To make a long story short, the plane ended up plunging 500 feet into the Great South Bay.
Two duck hunters met the couple, who were naked at the time of the crash. Of course being a little on the embarrassed side, they blamed their nakedness on the plane crash saying the crash “divested” them of their clothing, according to the Mile High Club Web site.
And so it began, the Mile High Club.
Ever since then, people have been experimenting with sexual intercourse on airplanes, usually in the restrooms.
“I think it’s one of those things you do to say you did it. I guess sometimes people just have the urge,” said Chris Turnquist, a senior business management major. “I believe younger people are more likely to join the Mile High Club because they have a high sex craze and are more open. Also we are more flexible and can get into more positions in a small place.”
Getting into those positions might be the rush of having sex in an airplane bathroom, or it could be having a couple hundred passengers just outside having no clue what you are doing — Either way it might just be the way to start spring break off with a bang.
Katrina Buttner, a junior psychology major, said she believes people might choose spring break to join the club because CU students are with other people who are their own age and who they are more attracted to.
“It’s not like you’re on a family vacation . you might feel more rambunctious,” Buttner said.
But even that attraction sometimes is not enough for the small and cramped space in an airplane bathroom, which is built for one person at a time. In this case people must become imaginative with their maneuvering powers.
First, it is recommended to take a red-eye flight, one that is overnight, because most of the passengers aboard are asleep; therefore, leaving an easy dash to the bathroom without suspicious looks.
If an overnight flight is not possible, don’t give up, there is still hope for joining the Mile High Club. In this case, you and your partner should wait until the in-flight movie starts before you make your dash. Waiting for the movie could help with distracting other passengers and also could help your odds with the captain and the seatbelt sign.
If you rush into the bathroom too soon, the seatbelt sign may turn back on and then your partner may be left out in his cold seat all alone while you are standing in the bathroom wondering if he changed his mind.
The key to getting two people into the bathroom at the same time is being discrete. The last thing you want is a flight attendant or passenger interrupting you and ruining your fun. So make sure to tell your partner to leave about three-five minutes after you have already left, leave the door unlocked and wait patiently for the adventure to begin.
The next obstacle you may encounter is maneuvering in the small confined bathroom. So as mentioned before, be creative. The sink, counter and toilet can be your friend. Just remember to put the toilet seat down and to not accidentally turn the water on — that could change the mood real fast.
Eloise Newell, a newly-appointed flight attendant for Horizon Airlines, she said the Mile High Club was never mentioned in her training about the rules and regulations regarding the club.
“Unless I was sleeping during that part, it was not covered,” Newell said. “I guess they think if they don’t talk about it, it won’t happen. It wasn’t a chapter in my manual, that’s for sure.”
Considering the training received by Newell never mentioned the club, it seems to not be as much of a problem as it was once believed to be. But this does not mean there are not consequences for your actions.
Be careful when making the decision on whether or not to join the Mile High Club. Consider all of the consequences because a charge of public indecency, or worse, may be warranted if you are caught with your pants down in an airplane.
If you are not feeling adventurous enough to become an official member of the Mile High Club this spring break, think of things this way — You do live in Denver, the Mile High city, so on a technicality you could consider yourself a member if you have had sexual intercourse in Denver.
