Many regional teams participated including: University of Wyoming, University of Northern Colorado, CU-Colorado Springs and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
For many of the Colorado athletes, the meet was a good start, but not the results that would actually qualify them for regionals. However, two members of the team did qualify. Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto, who finished second in the javelin throw with 49.21 meters, along with Zach Hazen, who finished sixth in the discus throw with 47.08 meters and first in the hammer throw with 58.60 meters, got regional-qualifying scores.
Senior Payton Batliner finished first in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8 minutes 37.99 seconds. Although he is satisfied with the results, he would have liked to do better to feel more prepared for the Stanford Invitational on March 30-31.
“I was six seconds off from where I wanted to be,” Batliner said.
Junior Liza Pasciuto had similar feelings about her 4:35.62 second-place finish in the 1500-meter run.
“I was a second slower than I wanted to be,” Pasciuto said. “Considering I haven’t raced in a while (since Nov. 20), I was pretty happy.”
Pasciuto also finished second with the CU B-team in the 1,600-meter relay.
Senior Erin Marston placed third in the 3000-meter run. Her 10:27.86 time set her personal best, beating her previous time of 10:44.17.
Although competing with fewer athletes than the track events, CU field athletes still had some solid finishes.
Chelsea Haverty placed first in the long jump with 5.51 meters. In the shot put, Kaity Kark placed second and Chynna McCall placed fourth. Kaity Kark also got third in the discus throw and fifth in the hammer throw.
For the men, Ryan Willis placed first in the shot put with 16.55 meters, as well as a fourth-place finish in the discus throw and a second-place finish in the hammer throw. Patrick Bachmann earned sixth in the discus throw.
Freshman Kevin Fasing was pleasantly surprised with his second-place finish in the javelin throw.
“I wanted to throw 180, and I threw 188. I exceeded everyone else’s expectations as well as my own,” Fasing said. “I set a pretty high standard today; this was my first meet.”
Chase Dukes and Kevin Waldron also placed in the javelin throw, with fourth and fifth respectively.
The team will continue competing for the next few weeks trying to earn regional-qualifying scores.
