The CU women’s tennis team doesn’t lose often to the Iowa State Cylones. Prior to Saturday’s match, the Buffs had defeated the Cyclones 25 of the last 27 times.
CU once again demolished the Cyclones, 7-0, at the Millennium Harvest House in Boulder.
In dominating fashion, sophomore Monica Milewski defeated Jill Palen 6-0, 6-4 in no. 1 singles and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
“Overall I think we came out and outworked them,” said head coach Nicole Kenneally. “I think we fought through some adversity in a couple matches, which was good.”
The No. 47 Buffs improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12 play. Iowa State dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Freshman Melisa Esposito who won her no. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-1, as well as her no. 3 doubles match with teammate Martina Sedivec 8-6.
The Buffs made quick work of an overmatched Cyclone team.

“I think we all came out and played really well,” Esposito said. “We’ve been really consistent.”
The scoring system in college tennis is based on team points. There are six singles matches and each one is worth a single point.
There are three doubles matches, and a team wins the point by taking at least two of three. The first team to earn four team points out of seven wins.
CU has won the doubles point six out of seven times this season.
In their two losses, against No. 44 Alabama and No. 48 Oregon State, the Buffs have only lost by a combined 3 points.
“(The season) is going well,” Kenneally said. “We look forward to keep improving as a team and just taking it one day at a time.”
Because of team depth, CU is having one of its more successful seasons in recent years.
“I think I’ve played really well at no. 6 (singles),” Esposito said. “I’m starting to grow into my game and am playing really well.”
The Buffs host the University of Northern Colorado Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Harvest House in Boulder. UNC is 2-25 against the Buffs all-time.
From there, the tennis team travels west to take on the No. 35 BYU Cougars on March 2 and hosts No. 13 Baylor on March 4.
