CP asks students about their plans for post-turkey shopping
It’s “Black Friday” again, and anyone who celebrates Thanksgiving or watches television knows that the day after the holiday is the biggest shopping day of the year.
Many students interviewed were approached on the Pearl Sreet Mall while shopping.
“I’m not shopping Friday for Christmas presents,” said Amanda Fraser, a psychology major at Metropolitan State College of Denver. “That’s lame. Who wants to get up at 5 a.m. anyways?”
Many others mirrored this sentiment and said they were planning to go shopping when they had the time.
“I don’t need a designated day to shop. I’ll do it when I’m ready,” said Phil Moak, a sophomore film major. “I know it’s tradition or whatever, but I’m still digesting from yesterday.”
But shopping on Black Friday remains a tradition for some.
“My family’s been doing it for six years now,” said Julia Jacoby, an interior design major at Arapahoe Community College. “It’s become a part of our tradition. We eat on Thursday, shop on Friday. There’s something about everyone in the store, the mood. It doesn’t feel like the holidays without it.”
Department stores like Kohl’s, Wal-Mart and Target opened at 5 and 6 a.m. the day after Turkey for eager customers. They will also remain open for later hours.
“I work in a department store, but I won’t be up at dawn,” said Ming Tang, a senior broadcast major. “I am so glad we aren’t open at 5 (a.m.) the Friday after Thanksgiving. I have heard, though, that people who do that make bank.”
Those who choose to participate in “Black Friday” have a few recommendations for a stress-free day of shopping, the first and most important being to snack on leftovers or bring along food.
After a food coma on Thursday, rest was probably not an issue for most, but be prepared for anything, said shoppers.
“Get lots of sleep. The turkey should help here; and set an alarm,” said Amy Silverman, a junior communication major.
When you’re finally done finding that perfect gift for Uncle John, come home, make a turkey sandwich and put those tootsies up.
“There’s nothing better than watching Christmas movies right after shopping,” Jacoby said.
