Eye candy – Halloween gets hot
From goblins to ghouls and everything in between, Halloween gets a little bit more exciting when you throw some sex into the mix.
Fascinations Superstore in Boulder sells a variety of “classic” Halloween costumes. Walls and racks are lined with French maid outfits, army uniforms and naughty nurse gear, not to mention pleather gloves and boots that reach mid-thigh. It’s enough to make anyone blush.
“We sell a lot of the naughty school girl, pirate and cop costumes. Those are the most popular,” said Gabi Bergin, manager of Fascinations in Boulder.
“I’m dressing as a nurse this year -not because I think that I have to be something sexy – I just want to,” said Megan Bruce, a senior CU student. “It’s the only night of the year you can go out wearing barely anything and no one gives you a dirty look. It’s OK and it’s exciting.”
Fascinations also sells costumes for men, ranging from a body-sized condom to a candy thong. But Bergin said that the majority of men’s costumes sold at Fascinations are pimp suits.
“I have a friend going as Lil’ Jon. Is that sexy,” asked Breanne Height, a student at Metro State College in Denver. “Dressing like Justin Timberlake, that would be a good costume. You know, he’s bringing sexy back.”
This seemed to be the trend at other costume shops as well. Manda Pendleton, an employee for The Ritz costume shop on Walnut Street, said that the most popular female costumes were French-maid and naughty-nurse outfits.
Sometimes, blockbuster movies with gorgeous actors inspire costuming trends.
“Pirates can be sexy for men or women, and those costumes are very popular this year because of Pirates of the Caribbean,” Pendleton said.
Some students have found sexy in the unusual this year.
“I’m going as a sexy trash can. I wanted to mock the idea of dressing scantily-clad and show that anything could be sexy, even trash,” said Jillian Williams, a freshman fine arts major.
When you’ve finally figured out what you’re going to (or not going to) wear, it’s time to get your “freak on.” But freak safely, said Jonna Fleming, the sexual health education coordinator at Wardenburg.
“My safer-sex advice is the same for Halloween as it is for any other time of the year. (Using) condoms reduces the risk of STIs by preventing fluid exchange and reducing skin-to-skin contact,” Fleming said.
What that boils down to is: Wherever you go and whatever you do this Halloween, make sure that you’re “doing it” safely. Plan ahead, bring a condom, and accessorize if you have to – lube works just fine.
“The best treat I could give someone on Halloween would have to be condoms,” said Zach Lorenzen, a student at Front Range Community College in Longmont.
The Boulder Police Department offered students tips to keep their evening from turning into a real horror story.
“We try to tell people that there’s always safety in numbers. Go with people you know,” said Julie Brooks, the public information officer for the Boulder Police Department. She also suggested communicating with roommates and friends, being aware of surroundings and drinks and avoiding shortcuts down alleys.
After all, you never know who’s behind that clown mask, or what a dame in pleather could do.
