Gamers can look forward to machine guns with attached chainsaws
This past weekend, Microsoft held its X06 video game convention in Barcelona, Spain, highlighting the new Xbox 360.
The convention, which ran from Sept. 27 into early October, showcased new games and accessories for the Xbox 360. Many CU students own the gaming console and are excited about the upcoming games.
One of the highlighted games at the convention, “Gears of War,” has excited many CU gamers. The game is a futuristic first-person shooter action game set in an apocalyptic Earth.
“‘Gears of War’ is said to have a very well-thought-out cooperative mode, innovative gameplay, and you have a chainsaw attached to a machine gun. How cool is that?” said sophomore astrophysics major Dan Nadler.
The convention also promoted two other upcoming games from the producers of the extremely popular game “Halo.” One of the games is called “Halo Wars” and is a real-time strategy version of the original, although it takes place before the first game. The other game is being produced secretly with “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson.
In a Microsoft press release, Jackson said, “From a movie maker’s point of view, it is clear to me that the Xbox 360 platform is the stage where storytellers can work their craft in the same way they do today with movies and books but taking it further with interactivity.”
Microsoft also revealed the new HD-DVD system as well. The new HD DVDs are expected to compete with Sony’s Blu-Ray technology. Both HD DVDs and Blu-Ray will support the high-definition video format and are expected to retail at about $30 per DVD.
The X06 convention also showcased over 20 new Xbox 360 games and many new accessories. From what Microsoft has shown at the convention, the XBox has a lot of new products and accessories to dominate the console market for the time being.
