It’s time to answer your CU sports questions once again! In this week’s mailbag, the CUI Sports staff discusses plans for a Folsom Stadium renovation, updates from club sports and the CU volleyball team, and a talented up-and-comer on the CU cross-country team.
1) Arizona State University recently announced its plans to renovate Sun Devil Stadium. Does CU plan to renovate Folsom Stadium any time soon?
There are some renovations planned, but no official announcement has been made. In the Varsity Room in the Dal Ward building on campus, there is a model of the new-and-improved Folsom Stadium on display. The administration is waiting for more funding to come into the project before making a public announcement.
2) How are club sports doing? Have any teams competed well recently?
Many of the club sports programs at CU have been doing very well as of the past few weeks. Congratulations to the CU Swimming and Diving team for winning the American Swimming Association National Championship last weekend. The CU Triathlon Team heads to USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals on April 21 after winning the Mountain Collegiate Triathlon Conference regional competition. The club women’s lacrosse team hosted the University of Colorado Tournament on Kittredge Field last weekend, taking down the University of Michigan, Brigham Young University and Santa Clara University in the process. Men’s lacrosse is 5-8 on the season; the Buffs have three regular-season games remaining against UC Santa Barbara on April 5, the University of Utah on April 14, and Colorado State University on April 21.
3) The women’s volleyball team had a tough first season in the Pac-12 Conference this past fall. How is next season looking for the Buffs?
Things have never been that easy for the women’s volleyball team and this past year was definitely a “rebuilding” year for the Buffs. Liz Kritza is one of those coaches who takes time to build and rebuild her program, always looking for new talent. When she’s unhappy with her squad, she gets completely new players. CU recruiting is getting better and better and will be necessary in the years to come with the difficulty of the Pac-12. The team’s two new assistant coaches, J.T. Wenger and Kristee Porter both played at UCLA and seem very excited to bring their Pac-12 expertise to Colorado. It’s still kind of up in the air on how the Buffs will look next year, but on April 21, the Buffs are hosting a spring tournament against Colorado State University and the U.S. Air Force Academy at Coors Events Center. The scrimmages should be a quick glimpse into how they may look next fall.
4) Who is going to be the athlete that comes out of nowhere next season and becomes a CU star (in any sport)?
Sophomore Jake Hurysz, a transfer track and cross-country athlete from the University of North Carolina, is currently in his first semester at CU. In the fall, he will run cross-country for CU for the first time. His personal bests are 3 minutes, 45.97 seconds in the 1500-meter outdoor, 8:01.97 in the outdoor 3k, and 14:14.84 in the outdoor 5k. As a freshman at UNC, he became the only Tar Heel to qualify for the NCAA Cross-Country Championships since 1997. Look out for him to be one of the men’s cross-country team’s top runners in the fall.
