The Buffs are not done yet.
The CU women’s basketball team was among 64 teams selected to play in the 2012 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), announced on Monday.
The Buffs (18-13 overall) will play the University of Northern Colorado (20-11 overall) in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, March 14 at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. Tipoff time is still TBD.
If the Buffs win, they will go on to play either Drake University or the University of South Dakota in the second round this weekend (March 17 to 19).
Colorado finished 10th in its first year in the Pac-12 Conference, with a conference record of 6-12. The UNC Bears came in second in the Big Sky Conference with an 11-5 conference record, earning an automatic bid into the tournament.
“It’s a good opportunity to give our young players a chance to play some extra games and gain experience in the postseason,” CU head coach Linda Lappe said to the CU Sports Information Department. “We’re starting to build a foundation of what’s to come in future years and we will continue to work hard to get better.”
The Buffs enter into postseason play for the second year in a row and the 20th time in team history. Colorado has only played in the WNIT three times before and is 7-3 overall in WNIT play. The Buffs advanced to the semifinals last season before falling to the University of Southern California.
