The women’s golf team is still looking for a signature tournament win this year.
Traveling to Gainesville, Fla., the Buffs found themselves in fourth place after the first two rounds at the 2011 University of Florida SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational.
But once the tournament wrapped up on Monday, nothing changed for the Buffs as Colorado finished with a team score of 596, placing them fourth in the tournament. The Gators topped the tournament with a score of 572.
Nine of the top 46 golf teams were present at the tournament.
Jessica Wallace, a junior at CU, gave a shining performance during the tournament. The Vancouver native took third place overall in individual rankings in the tournament with a score of 216.
“Again, as a team, we didn’t get off to a good start,” Anne Kelly, head coach of the CU women’s golf team, said. “But we had some bright spots. Jess was 5-over after six holes and ended up three over, moving back into contention by the end of the round.”
Wallace started off her round with two straight bogeys. She ended her round with 3-over par 73, going 6-over par 216 to land a spot in a four-way tie.
“It was an interesting start for me, not exactly what I was going for,” Wallace said. “I had some bad rolls and bounces early in the round; I wasn’t hitting bad shots or anything like that.”
The Buffs will take some time off before heading to Tucson, Ariz., to host the two-day MountainView Collegiate tournament starting on March 25.
“It will be nice to have a little break,” Kelly said. “The last three weeks has given us an idea of what each individual needs to work on, so it will be nice to have some time to practice those things.”
