Colorado’s women’s golf is off to a fast start this week at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Colombia, Mo.
Halfway through the two-day, 72-hole event, the Buffs sit alone in second place after Monday. They trail only Oklahoma State in the 15-team invitational.
The highest nationally ranked team in the field at 15, Colorado responded from a disappointing 298 morning score to shoot 289 in the afternoon. The Buffaloes trail Oklahoma State by eight shots with 36 holes remaining.
Junior Jessica Wallace led the Buffs individually Monday, making nine birdies on her way to a blistering 72-69. Wallace is tied for second individually, just one shot behind leader Kelly Shon from Princeton.
After a disappointing 5-over-41 on her opening nine holes, CU junior Emily Talley finished her last 27 in 3 under par. Her 75-71 puts her in 9th place, one shot ahead of freshman teammate Kristin Coleman, whose steady 73-74 has her tied for 11th.
Rounding out the Buff’s team scores were sophomore Taylor Doyle (78-75) and freshman Jenny Coleman (80-75).
Hosted by the University of Missouri, the tournament features eight teams from the Big 12. Those teams will return to The Club at Old Hawthorne in April when Missouri hosts the 2011 Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship.
After Tuesday’s finish in Colombia, the Buffs head home to host the 13th Annual University of Colorado/Heather Farr Memorial Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
