If only the rest of the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team could have had as good of a day as senior Monica Milewski.
Milewski tied a personal best 25th singles victory of the season after defeating No. 23 nationally ranked Aeriel Ellis 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. The Buffs still lost the overall match, however, 5-2 to the Texas Longhorns on Sunday at the South Campus Courts in Boulder. It was CU’s final match of the regular season.
The victory for Milewski, who is ranked 93rd nationally, was the 90th of her career. She is the second women’s tennis player in school history to win that many matches. Emily Smith owns the record with 95 wins from 1995 to 99.
Colorado’s only other point on the day came in doubles, winning 2-1 over the Longhorns in the doubles matches.
Even though the Buffs couldn’t come out with the win, CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said she was encouraged by the effort of her squad.
“I’m very proud of how the team came out and competed today,” Kenneally said in a news release. “It was a solid doubles point. Obviously it was a loss, but I think it was the most solid performance we have played against Texas in four or five years. We’ll take that momentum into the Big 12 Tennis Championships next week.”
The Big 12 Championships will begin on Thursday for the Buffs in Austin, Texas. CU’s first round opponent has yet to be decided.
