Police are encouraging students to keep doors and windows closed, even during the good weather, after a recent incident, said Boulder Police Department Public Information Officer Sarah Huntley.
According to a recent Boulder Police Department blotter, police arrested 22-year-old sexual offender Dustin Winesberry Sunday on a charge of second-degree trespassing. Winesberry had climbed onto the balcony of a residence on the 1100 block of Pleasant Street that evening and tried to engage the females there in conversation.
“The [victim] was on the phone when she saw a man on the balcony talking through the living room glass sliding door that was open,” Huntley said. “He said ‘Hey I want to hang out with you girls.’ [The victim] ran to the door, shut it and locked it and then she and her roommate called the police.”
She said Winesberry identified himself as a registered sex offender. He is listed as a transient from Aurora.
“He does not appear to be a CU student, but the victims are,” Huntley said.
There were two victims, the initial complainant and her roommate, she said.
Huntley said Winesberry was contacted by the police a short distance away, and the girls were able to positively identify him.
To avoid these situations in the future, especially as the weather becomes nicer, there are patio doors locks available at hardware stores that only allow doors to open a certain amount, Huntley said.
She said in addition to these locks, there are other precautions students can take.
“We definitely caution against leaving doors and windows open or maybe just leave them partially open,” Huntley said.
