Colorado’s women’s soccer team continues their spring season momentum.
The Buffs won 5-1 against Regis University at the indoor practice bubble facility in Boulder Wednesday night. It is their second win early in their 2010 spring schedule.
“We’ve been moving people around a lot in the spring, playing different formations, and tonight was another one of those experiments,” said Colorado head coach Bill Hempen.
Regis opened the scoring in only the first minute of play. A lapse in concentration allowed freshman Chelsea Bokan to slip a pass through Colorado’s defense to Jordan Miller, who slotted it home.
After the goal, Colorado’s players looked shocked, but picked up the pace, and maintained the majority of possession throughout the rest of the 45 minutes. Although the buffs were slick in their passing, shots on goal were hard to come by. At the halftime whistle, the score was 1-0 to Regis.
“Our halftime talk just inspired everyone to take chances and not be so safe,” said sophomore forward Erin Bricker.
The inspiration was visible in the Buffs in the second half. They dominated possession, much like they had done in the first half, but with better results.
Colorado’s first goal came as junior forward Caroline Danneberg streaked into Regis’ box. Her shot was blocked, and fell to Bricker hit the open goal.
Even with the game tied, the Buffs had more.
Bricker again came running down the Regis, and looked to be heading for goal when she was brought down in the box by a Regis defender. The ref immediately pointed to the penalty spot, and Bricker coolly slotted home the penalty kick for goal number two.
Later, Danneberg collected the ball, and dribble through the weakened Regis defense. After getting herself into a tight angle, she ripped a shot past the keeper to score the Buffs third goal.
A comedy of error took place on the fourth goal by senior defender Kelly Ross.
Ross took a long-range effort that the Regis’ keeper looked to have under control, but somehow she bobbled the ball through her legs and into the back of the net.
The Buffs final goal came off an assist from sophomore midfielder Lauren Shaner, who left an easy shot for sophomore defender Lexi Rakestraw.
Up next, the Buffs will play Metro State in Boulder on March 19.
