Apparently, the Colorado Buffaloes volleyball team can only beat one conference opponent — Texas Tech.
The Buffs dropped to 7-18 overall and 2-14 in the Big 12 Conference as they fell to No. 21 Baylor in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14, Wednesday at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. CU’s only two wins against conference foes this season came against Texas Tech, which they beat Saturday.
The turning point came in the first set when CU held a slim 11-10 lead. Baylor snatched 11 of the next 12 points and the Bears never looked back in the easy win.
“Tonight’s performance is clearly not what we consider high level,” CU head volleyball coach Liz Kritza said in a news release. “In this tough league, we will get take our losses, but there is a difference in getting beat and losing, and our poor performance in our ball control led to a sub-par performance.”
Sophomore outside hitter Becah Fogle led the Buffs with eight kills and 11 digs while freshman setter Megan Cyr delivered 21 assists.
CU’s next game will be at 7 p.m. Saturday when they host the Missouri Tigers at the Coors Events Center.
Six commit to Kritza, CU
Despite the loss to Baylor, there was cause for celebration.
During the game, a news release was sent to the local media announcing the Buffs signing six high school volleyball players for the 2010 season.
The initial members of Kritza’s first recruiting class are Emily Alexis (Brighton, Colo.), Megan Beckwith (Leesburg, Va.), Nichole Lindow (Erie, Colo.), Elysse Richardson (Vienna, Va.), Morgan Tholen (Lake Quivira, Kan.) and Hannah Walker (Peyton, Colo.).
“This first recruiting class is comprised of a group of strong willed young women who are committed to the pursuit of excellence and to building a championship program here at CU,” Kritza said in a news release. “Amongst this group, we will have many high level prep players, excellent athletes, and players with international experience, but most importantly, we are pleased to announce the addition of a group of excellent student-athletes, who will represent the University of Colorado extremely well.”
