After Boulder endured a snowstorm earlier in the week, the Colorado Buffaloes volleyball team had to deal with a cyclone of their own.
The Buffs dropped their fifth consecutive match as they lost in straight sets to the ninth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, 25-21, 25-14, 25-16, on Saturday at the Coors Events Center. CU fell to 6-16 on the season and 1-12 in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State improved to 19-3 and 11-2, respectively.
“Tonight was a tough match, and while we were able to put together a solid performance in the first set against a top 10 team, that same high-level performance eluded us in the final two sets,” head volleyball coach Liz Kritza said in a news release.
CU got off to a quick start with the first two points of the match. Iowa State answered with 10 of the next 13 points to take a 10-5 lead in the first set. After a timeout, the Buffs scored three straight points to cut the deficit to two. Later, Iowa State pushed the lead up to six, but another timeout proved beneficial to CU as they closed the gap in half and trailed 20-17. However, the Cyclones held off CU to take the first set.
The next two sets weren’t pretty as Iowa State jumped out to 13-5 and 11-6 leads, respectively, to cruise to victory.
Sophomore outside hitter Rosie Steinhaus led CU with 12 kills and 12 digs while Becah Fogle added 12 kills as well.
The Buffs’ next game will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against the Kansas Jayhawks in the Coors Events Center.
