Road games can be a bit of a hassle. For the Colorado Buffaloes, it’s quickly becoming a frustrating affair.
The women’s soccer team was unable to capture a road win against Big 12 Conference title contender Missouri on Friday, losing 1-0 in overtime in Columbia, Mo.
Head coach Bill Hempen said playing a road night game at Missouri can be very difficult.
“This is the second year in a row that we had to do that,” Hempen said in a news release. “We certainly faced off better tonight than a year ago. But they played hard, sometimes a little too hard. But if the referee doesn’t think that, then play on. I’m all for it.”
Under constant Missouri pressure, Colorado was outshot on goal 9-2 and 23-6 overall.
Freshman forward Shaye Marshall was the author of one of the shots on goal after a pass from senior forward and sister Nikki Marshall.
Mizzou broke through 36 seconds into OT when Michelle Collins dished the ball to Alysha Bonnick, who one-timed it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
The loss is the second consecutive defeat for the Buffs. Despite the losing streak, Colorado (7-7, 4-2) remains atop the Big 12, while Missouri (7-4-3, 2-0-2 Big 12) sits tied in fourth place.
Hempen, in light of the loss, saw the game as constructive for his young squad.
“From the physical standpoint, our young players grew up tonight and if I thought that they ever weren’t ready for this sort of play, they just got ready,” Hempen said in a news release. “Sometimes that’s the best way to do it.”
Colorado, who has yet to win a road game this season, will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Kansas Jayhawks at noon on Sunday.
