Sometimes, defenders play the best offense.
The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team benefited from that Friday afternoon as the Buffs got two goals from their defenders to beat the Utah Utes 2-1 at Prentup Field.
“Our forwards weren’t effective today and they looked tired,” said head coach Bill Hempen in a news release. “Even though I know they were giving it their all, they just couldn’t capitalize today. We ended up getting two goals from our defenders, which is good, but next time we would like to see one of our forwards put one in.”
It took less than eight minutes for CU to get on the board with a goal from senior defender Kelly Ross. after a one-touch pass by freshman forward Erin Bricker in the box to give the Buffs the lead.
Utah would tie the game at one apiece with a goal by Erin Dalley in the 55th minute. But junior defender Kym Lowry’s goal with less than three minutes to play would be the game winner for CU.
Utah outshot Colorado 14-13, but the Buffaloes had more shots on goal with six compared to Utah’s five.
CU will finish the weekend in Gainesville, Fla., as they take on the No. 14 Florida Gators at 10 a.m. (MST) on Sunday.
