Men’s golf team prepared to tee off for another semester
The men’s golf team is ready to hit the links this spring with a renewed vigor and a positive attitude.
Their season begins this week in Waikoloa, Hawaii, at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate. Head golf coach Roy Edwards said the team’s outlook is optimistic.
“I feel great about the spring season – the guys are excited and working hard,” Edwards said.
Edwards said the team is prepared for the tournament regardless of the adverse weather conditions in Colorado affecting team practice.
“We focus on getting out and avoiding the weather,” Edwards said. “Weather only affects us as much as we want to.”
Edwards said weight training, indoor practice and fitness routines kept the players on their toes during the winter downtime. Members of the team have also been focusing on the mental aspect of the game as well.
Junior Derek Tolan said, “My goal for this season is to keep a small stroke average, hopefully under 72. I want to keep more focus.”
The team will need to be on their game as they head into a challenging season. They have a difficult road ahead, meeting No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama and No. 4 Georgia Tech among others.
“We are playing the best teams in the country, but we feel like we’re ready to take them on,” Edwards said. “We belong in that group.”
The team will be busy through the end of March, when the Big 12 Championship and the NCAA Regional take place.
“I’m ready to come out fresh and strong,” Tolan said. “I’m really looking forward to those big tournaments.”
Assistant coach Ben Portie said the challenging competition may even be beneficial to the team.
“We play well against tough competition,” Portie said.
As they begin their spring season, Edwards said his team has high hopes.
“We need to keep believing in ourselves,” Edwards said. “We belong at the top.”
