Service for Sidwell to be held Friday
CU basketball legend Donald Sidwell passed away Monday in Centennial. The 90-year-old man’s legacy at Colorado will always be remembered.
Sidwell was part of the first Buffs team to head into the NCAA men’s basketball postseason. He played for the 1937-38 National Invitation Tournament team.
The Buffs went 15-6, defeating New York University before eventually losing to Temple. Throughout his following three years at CU, he helped the team to a 39-15 record.
Basketball was not Sidwell’s only athletic talent. He also lettered in baseball.
There was more to the former Buff than sports, though. The Kansas native served in China during WWII. Afterwards, he worked as an oil businessman until his late retirement.
Sidwell’s legacy lives on through his seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Both of his sons, David and Steve, played CU football. Steve was considered one of the most impressive inside linebackers in CU football history after his 1963-65 career.
Sidwell’s memory will always remain in Buffs fan’s hearts everywhere, and the university will never forget one of the most prominent student-athletes ever to play basketball at CU.
The memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Fairmount Cemetery at 430 S. Quebec St. in Denver.
