Former Attorney General speaks to CU students
Former Attorney General John Ashcroft will speak to CU students Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Macky Auditorium.
Ashcroft’s appearance is sponsored by the Cultural Events Board as part of its notable speaker series.
“It’s to educate the campus on an underrepresented viewpoint,” CEB Vice Chairwoman Katelin Lucariello said. “(His conservative) voice is missing or marginalized on campus. Different people will go see him for different reasons, but he’s intriguing nonetheless.”
CEB speakers coordinator Taurean Davis said the speech “basically goes over some of his decision-making behind (homeland security),” as well as the future of the Patriot Act that was originally adopted in Oct. of 2001 and supported by Ashcroft.
A coffee and tea gathering to further discuss the issues that will be held afterward from 9 to 10 p.m. in the lobby of the Humanities building.
While the speech will focus on security, questions asked afterward can “run the gamut of Ashcroft interests,” including his Christian viewpoint or the war on drugs, Lucariello said.
The question and answer session will consist of both questions asked by CEB and by the crowd.
“He’s one on the few speakers that is open to any question even if it is not positioned favorably to him,” Lucariello said.
Students can get tickets for free at the UMC connection. Tickets are $5 for non-students who wish to attend.
