Women’s basketball player career totals 1,300 points
The CU Women’s basketball team shares a special tie with the city of Derby, Kan.
Hailing from this small town of about 18,000 is one of CU’s most prominent women basketball stars, Jackie McFarland.
Only the fifth player in CU history to have career totals of 1,300 points and 700 rebounds, McFarland, a senior accounting major, has established herself as one of the best players in CU basketball history.
“All the honors have been very exciting,” said McFarland.
Jackie performed magnificently during her junior year, receiving 533 points throughout the entire season, along with 17.8 double-doubles and an average of 10.8 rebounds per game. She is only the second player in team history to get 500 points and 300 rebounds in one season, just behind CU Women’s Basketball legend Lisa Van Goor.
“It’s just an amazing feeling being considered on the same level as the greats,” McFarland said.
Aside from her stats, McFarland is known for her leadership ability. The preseason rankings for the 2007-08 team this year were surprisingly low, but that has only given the team motivation to prove the rankings wrong.
“I like being an under dog, and it is always exciting to have a number three team come in here, it is just a little added motivation,” McFarland said.
Along with Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller and a new offense this year, McFarland said she wants the talent of the team’s offense to show.
“With this new offense we have to move the entire time,” McFarland said. “One of the biggest things is that there’s always movement.”
