Only a few students displaced in 2006 blaze
An early morning blaze at a Boulder condominium building Friday is the second fire at the Gold Run complex in two years.
In January 2006, a fire initially displaced 75 residents from the campus-adjacent Gold Run Condominium complex, which is popular with CU students.
The 2006 blaze destroyed half of the 36 units in the building at 2990 Shadow Creek Drive. Friday’s fire took place at 2802 Sundown Lane in the complex.
According to CU officials, in the days following the first fire, only a few students remained displaced.
“We had a small handful of students displaced by the fire,” university spokesman Bronson Hilliard said. “Those students all found housing on their own.”
A larger number of students was affected by the fire, but the number of displaced students was relatively small, Hilliard said.
Today’s fire may be a different story. The Colorado Red Cross estimates 50 to 60 residents have been initially displaced. Victim resources are in the process of being aligned by Red Cross representatives at the scene.
Joan Cernich, is working with Red Cross Disaster Services, interviewing students at the scene to determine how students have been affected by the catastrophe and their recovery plans.
“There is a substantial amount of students affected,” Cernich said.
The university and the Red Cross are working together to ease the recovery process for building residents.
“CU has been very generous,” Cernich said. “Anyone can go to the dining halls and get a temporary meal card.”
