New building adds 65,000 sq. ft., modern technology to business school
The CU Leeds School of Business dedicated the new Koelbel Building on Oct. 19.
Several notables came to speak at the dedication, including Governor Bill Ritter and the Koelbel family, for which the building is named.
Alumni came for the dedication, including one man from the class of 1936.
Christian Bauer, an alumnus from the class of 1987, is impressed.
“It’s really modernized,” Bauer said.
Current students also have been impressed by the new building.
“The architecture is really well done,” said Justin Stasiowski, a freshman open option major, who is thinking of becoming a business student.
The ceremony started with a procession by the CU marching band, playing the CU fight song and other stadium cheers.
Governor Ritter said a few words about the new building and the university in general. He emphasized the generosity of the Koelbel family to commit money that allowed the addition to the business school to be built.
“It is important to acknowledge the commitment of the Koelbel family,” Ritter said.
After Governor Ritter, CU Chancellor Bud Peterson spoke. He echoed the governor’s thanks to the Koelbel family, the students and the state of Colorado, saying that they all made the construction and renovation possible.
“This is a winning trio – students, donors and the state of Colorado,” Peterson said.
Peterson outlined the new features of the new building: more classrooms, modern technology and increased space. The new building has added approximately 65,000 square feet onto the old building.
Dennis Ahlburg, dean of the Leeds School of Business, spoke about the Koelbel contribution.
“Without the Koelbel family, the building would still be on the drawing board,” Ahlburg said.
Buz Koelbel, President of Koelbel and Co., spoke about the building where he attended school. When he attended CU, the old building was new.
“It’s a sign of how fast times change,” Koelbel said.
