Here are the Campus Press sports section’s picks of the week:
Things stay tight as everyone still has a shot. On to this week.
Stirling Wade-Sports Editor-Overall: 24-16, Last Week: 5-3
(1) LSU 33, (17) Kentucky 16 – Andre Woodson is going to get smothered by the nation’s No. 1 defense.
(11) Missouri 20, (6) Oklahoma 21 – Missouri always seems to get out to a fast start under Gary Pinkel before fading down the stretch. I’m not saying that will happen this season, but Oklahoma on the road is too much to ask.
(22) Auburn 17, Arkansas 27 – Scouts literally drool over themselves as they watch Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden put together a showcase game for the Heisman Trophy.
Texas A&M 31, Texas Tech 34 – This is a match-up of two programs that are always fun and competitive, but you never really take them too seriously. I like the Red Raiders at home.
(18) Illinois 30, Iowa 27 – Can Illinois handle this type of success and the pressure that comes with it? Against Iowa your answer is a resounding yes.
Georgia Tech 17, Miami (FL) 13 – Picking Miami has gotten me into trouble all year. I’ll take Georgia Tech by default.
Oklahoma State 35, Nebraska 42 – Both defenses are unstoppable. I guess I’ll go with the corn at home.
Colorado 20, Kansas State 23 – Josh Freeman had a whale of a game against the CU defense last season. I think he’ll make a few more plays than Cody Hawkins does in this one.
Amanda Walck-Sports Writer-Overall: 18-22, Last Week: 5-3
(1) LSU 28, (17) Kentucky 17 – LSU’s defense will power them through to another week on top.
(11) Missouri 24, (6) Oklahoma 28 – Oklahoma needs to win this game to gain back more of the confidence they lost two weeks ago.
(22) Auburn 21, Arkansas 31 – This one will be a battle of the running games. I think Arkansas will take it.
Texas A&M 28, Texas Tech 35 – Tech has looked really good this season and home field advantage will put them over the top.
(18) Illinois 31, Iowa 28 – Illinois is used to upsets but only when they are the ones bringing down a ranked team.
Georgia Tech 17, Miami (FL) 14 – I just don’t feel like this will be the week where Miami gets back on track.
Oklahoma State 34, Nebraska 35 – Nebraska fans are crazy. They are lucky to be at home in Lincoln this week.
Colorado 24, Kansas State 21 – The Buffs need to keep their momentum going on all sides of the ball for this one.
Derek Schimmel-Sports Writer-Overall: 23-17, Last Week: 6-2
(1) LSU 28, (17) Kentucky 13 – LSU bent but never broke last week against UF. The Tigers defense won’t let that happen again, and they will shut down Andre Woodson.
(11) Missouri 31, (6) Oklahoma 17 – I’m going against everything I’ve said all season. Oklahoma looked terrible against CU, and their win over Texas wasn’t overly impressive. Mizzu may move into the top five after a win.
(22) Auburn 17, Arkansas 42 – Arkansas has underachieved all season. Darren McFadden gets them on track here in a blowout.
Texas A&M 28, Texas Tech 31 – The home team seems to always prevail in the battle of these two Texas schools.
(18) Illinois 28, Iowa 24 – The Fighting Illini have been one of the most surprising teams all year. Even on the road, they will continue to move up the rankings.
Georgia Tech 17, Miami (FL) 24 – Two teams that show signs of life, than throw it all out the window. I’ll take the home team.
Oklahoma State 35, Nebraska 42 – Nebraska wins this not because of their talent, but because OK State isn’t that good. And their coach is too busy bitching at the media.
Colorado 34, Kansas State 17 – CU blew out Baylor last week, and the team was unhappy about their sub-par play. The bar has been raised, and the Buffs are back in the college football world.
Brad Cochi-Sports Writer-Overall: 22-18, Last Week: 5-3
(1) LSU 33, (17) Kentucky 13 – Come on, this one is just a no-brainer. LSU dominates the way they have.
(11) Missouri 21, (6) Oklahoma 24 – Missouri makes it a contest, but Oklahoma gets back to business this week.
(22) Auburn 21, Arkansas 28 – Two words: Darren McFadden.
Texas A&M 28, Texas Tech 31 – Tech has quite a quarterback/wide receiver tandem at their disposal. A&M won’t be able to keep up on the scoreboard.
(18) Illinois 28, Iowa 24 – Illinois has been hot and they will stay hot this week.
Georgia Tech 24, Miami (FL) 13 – Miami is just not a good team.
Oklahoma State 35, Nebraska 45 – Nebraska has home field advantage and a quarterback who can put up points, especially against a mediocre defense like Oklahoma State.
Colorado 27, Kansas State 17 – Colorado’s defense has been unbelievable lately and their offense is coming together. CU has to focus on stopping Freeman and the game is theirs.
Margot Schneider-Sports Writer-Overall: 23-17, Last Week: 5-3
(1) LSU 31, (17) Kentucky 13 – I like picking Kentucky to lose, and this time they will. LSU is going to be in the national championship and Kentucky won’t.
(11) Missouri 24, (6) Oklahoma 27 – There’s something about this Missouri team that makes me think they suck-ranking or not. Now that may not be true, but they still are not going to beat Oklahoma on the road.
(22) Auburn 17, Arkansas 27 – Even if Darren McFadden plays, the bruised ribs after last week’s game are going to take their toll. On the other hand, Auburn is getting into an offensive groove. However, the likelihood of Auburn powering through their defensive injuries and winning on the road is unlikely.
Texas A&M 31, Texas Tech 34 – Tech is excelling where A&M is not. They have Graham Harrell playing great at quarterback, leading the nation in offense, Michael Crabtree receiving like there’s no tomorrow, and as long as they can get their defense going, the complete lack of a run game shouldn’t be a problem.
(18) Illinois 30, Iowa 27 – Illinois is on a role, and they will be able to use that momentum to beat Iowa for the first time since 2000.
Georgia Tech 24, Miami (FL) 13- Georgia Tech has surprised me this season. I don’t think Miami will be able to bounce back from that Carolina loss with enough momentum to beat the Yellow Jackets.
Oklahoma State 38, Nebraska 45 – I guess I just have to say I won’t be watching this game . it most likely won’t be football at its finest.
Colorado 20, Kansas State 17 – Josh Freeman has been pretty inconsistent, so, given his consistent inconsistency, CU could have a good chance in this one.
