Buffs improve record to 6-3-3 with second straight conference win
The CU women’s soccer team defeated the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday, 1-0. Although the weather was cold, it didn’t stop the team from putting on a heated performance.
Sophomore Nikki Marshall started the action with her sixth goal of the season 19:14 minutes into play.
“Today’s win was big for us,” Marshall said.
The team holds a record of 6-3-3, having losses only against Stanford, Virginia and Big 12 opponent Texas Tech. Colorado out-shot the Cyclones 3-1, raising their record against Iowa State to 10-2, with a 7-0 record against the Cyclones in Boulder.
“Sometimes you have to grind it out,” said head coach Bill Hempen.
After Marshall’s goal, play continued back and forth until Iowa State’s Stephanie Kaphingst got a yellow card, providing the Buffs with extra momentum.
The second half was scoreless, but Iowa State’s numerous fouls, including another yellow card by Stephanie Kaphingst, ensured the Buffs with a victory.
CU’s next two match-ups are both Big 12 away matches against Baylor and Texas A&M. Both matches should be challenging, with Baylor having an 8-0-1 record and the Aggies being ranked No. 6 in the nation.
“Even though we had a tough week, Bill (Hempen) knows what he is doing and we went out there today and made it click,” Marshall said.
