The Buffs get a 6-1 victory over the Sooners
CU women’s tennis defeated the University of Oklahoma at the South Campus Tennis Courts today for their fifth straight win. The 6-1 victory gives the No. 35 Buffs an 8-2 record in Big 12 play and 15-6 overall.
The day opened at 11 a.m. with the doubles matches. Although Camila Belassi and Gleisy Torres Torres lost the No. 1 match 4-8, Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian took the No. 2 match 8-5 and Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec took No. 3 8-6. Esposito and Sedivec now have a doubles record of 12-2.
Milewski, ranked nationally as the No. 35 singles player, was not impressed by her doubles performance.
“I don’t think I played my best today in doubles but I stuck through it and Franzie kind of kept pumping me up and calming me down because I was getting kind of frustrated,” Milewski said. “We pulled through at the end. It came to like 4-4 and she kind of helped me up and finished off.”

Milewski opened her No. 1 singles set strong at 3-0 before winning the match to default when Oklahoma’s Gabby Baker had to retire because of an injury.
Despite not feeling her play was as strong as it should be, Belassi defeated Monica Purice in the No. 2 singles match.
“I know I fight hard and I just am really happy I won because I don’t feel I am playing my best match, my best tennis,” Belassi said. “I just don’t feel 100 percent confident with the way I am playing.”
Belassi saw a promising outlook for her upcoming matches against the University of Nebraska.
“I feel really good actually,” Belassi said. “I think this victory today is going to make me feel more confident for tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to do the same thing I did today.”
At the No. 6 singles spot, Esposito got her second victory of the day.
“I think I played really well,” Esposito said concerning her singles win over Anne Carter and her doubles win with Sedivec. “I think I came out and got what I needed to do, done.”
As the final singles match was wrapping up, it looked as if Veera Nurmi was going to take a hard loss to give the Sooners their only point of the day.
Oklahoma’s Irina Lykina had won the first set 6-4 and was up 4-0 in the second. Nurmi took the next four games to tie the set at four. Lykina got the next game, but then Nurmi tied the game again at 5. Lykina came back to take the next two games, though, and win the set 7-5, taking the No. 3 singles point.
Colorado looks for its sixth straight win April 22 against Nebraska.
“I think we have a really good chance,” Esposito said. “The team is playing really, really well.”
Belassi had a similar positive outlook on the Nebraska match, as well as the season as a whole.
“We are doing so good. I am really happy about our results and the team,” Belassi said.
The Buffs play Nebraska April 22 at 11 a.m. at the South Campus Tennis Courts for the last match of the regular season.
