Student faces $2,000 bond, banned from campus contact
A CU student was arrested last night for possessing campus-banned firearms in his Kittridge West dorm room.
Matthew Furnish, a freshman international affairs major, was taken to the Boulder County Jail for unlawful possession of deadly weapons on campus after an anonymous caller alerted police.As of 6:05 p.m. Friday, Furnish has yet to be released on a $2,000 bond.
As conditions of his release, Furnish is not allowed to have any contact with the CU campus or possess any weapons until he makes further court appearances. His next court date is scheduled for April 24 at 2 p.m. at the Boulder County Jail.
After searching his room, police found a Glock .40-caliber handgun, a Remington 12-guage shotgun, several hundred rounds of ammunition, magazine clips for weapons and a 12-inch knife, according to a CUPD press release.
Police seized the weapons and noted that they were all unloaded at the time. There were no known violent threats from Furnish, according to police.
The university issued a summary suspension against Furnish and he has been excluded from campus property, the press release stated.
“This is an example of how the community can work with the police to enhance campus safety,” CUPD Chief of Police Joe Roy said. “We encourage people to contact us regarding any situation they believe poses a safety risk to members of our community.”
The Regents have passed laws banning firearms from campus unless possessed by a police officer. If a student wishes to participate in hunting or target practice, CUPD will register and store the weapons.
At the time of this incident, Furnish had registered and stored a rifle with CUPD under this program, according to the press release.
Furnish’s myspace.com profile lists one of his interests as “gunsmithing” and another as “airsoft,” referring to the recreational game where participants shoot one another with plastic pellets from air guns. Furnish also belongs to MySpace social groups “Glock Gun Club” and “Preserve the 2nd Amendment.”
Furnish’s parents, who attended his court hearing, refused to comment. Furnish is a graduate of Arapaho High School in Littleton, CO.
