The Women’s Resource Center of CU will be hosting and coordinating a series of events throughout this week as part of “Breaking Global Silence: Exposing Violence Towards Women” in honor of the International Day Against Violence Towards Women, which passed over Thanksgiving vacation. Seminars regarding violence towards other sexual minorities will also be stressed.
“This is our fourth annual week of events. We always hold it around International Day Against Violence Towards Women – which was sparked by an incident of violence a few years ago towards a group of young girls – and it will include movies, speakers and workshops in collaboration with all sorts of student groups,” said junior women’s studies major Meghan Bennett, WRC’S Violence Against Women outreach coordinator.
Bennett said WRC is merely the coordinator and host of the project, while several other groups, such as Amnesty International, the Dennis Small Cultural Center, the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, etc., will all be contributing their fair share under one united banner from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.
“This year’s week is going to be much more theoretically based; discussions about masculinity constructions and gender roles as they influence society will be the main focus, so it’ll be somewhat of a change from the previous years,” Bennett said.
The week will entail the following events, as listed in the WRC Web site:
