“It’s a great day; it’s a great cause,” said Richard Castro, the race director. “It’s always important to get folks out there to support causes like the Community Food Share.”
Castro, who is also president of Boulder Road Runners, said the Turkey Trot began about 15 years ago.
“I’ve been doing running in the community for 30 years, and I’ve always thought (running) was important,” he said. “We want to get more people involved.”
The race begins at 10 a.m., and participants are invited to run and walk at their leisure. A kids’ race begins at 10:45 a.m.
“We encourage people to make donations and bring a canned food item,” Castro said.
The race entry fee is $5 for Boulder Road Runners members, children and all CU faculty, staff and students. The fee is $10 for everyone else. Both rates are valid until noon on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Race-day registration begins at 9 a.m. at Potts Field, and the entry fee is $15.
Potts Field is at the CU Research Park, located on the north side of Colorado Avenue, between 30th Street and Foothills Parkway. Parking is free.
Castro said many families participate in the Turkey Trot, and that a family with 17 members participated last year.
“Thanksgiving is a good time for family and friends,” he said. “We award a special prize for the largest family. We certainly have an awful lot of awards and prizes this year.”
Castro said every participant is eligible to win prizes.
The race is sponsored by Nike, Clif Bar, Great Harvest Bread Company, and the Walnut Brewery, among others.
