CU:I Top 10 college football poll

The first Bowl Championship Series poll was released to the public on Sunday, meaning college football is in mid-season form.

Here at the CU Independent, the sports staff decided to start our own poll detailing our Top 10 teams in college football.

In our first poll, Florida is No. 1 with five first place votes while Southeastern Conference rival Alabama is second with two first place votes.

At the bottom of our poll we have a tie for No. 10 as both TCU and Oregon compiled seven points each.

Here is the first CU Independent poll for the 2009 season:

No. 1 Florida, 6-0, 68 points (5): “Still the defending national champions and even though quarterback Tim Tebow’s offense is struggling a tad, the defense is playing superb and is the best defense statistically in the nation,” – Michael Krumholtz, staff writer

No. 2 Alabama, 7-0, 63 points (2): “In the trenches they are as mean as head coach Nick Saban himself, and that makes me more scared of them than Tebow and company.” – Brent Wilson New, staff writer

No. 3 Texas, 6-0, 55 points: “The Longhorns scraped by to beat the Oklahoma Sooners, but their record is strong enough for them to be No. 3.” – Kayla Cornett, staff writer

No. 4 Cincinnati, 6-0, 40 points: “Match them up against TCU or Boise State, and I like them by two touchdowns or more in either game.” – New

No. 5 USC, 5-1, 36 points: “Their hard-fought victory over Notre Dame keeps the Trojans in the national title hunt. Halloween’s game against Oregon will likely decide the Pac-10 championship.” – David Starcer, CU:I men’s basketball beat writer

No. 6 Boise State, 6-0, 34 points: “The blue turf should get them in the Top 10 alone, not to mention they are one of the steadiest programs in the country.” – Ron Knabenbauer, CU:I co-sports editor

No. 7 Iowa, 7-0, 31 points: “I have trouble putting a Big Ten Conference team here, but they do own the nation’s second longest winning streak next to Florida’s.” – Krumholtz

No. 8 Miami (FL), 5-1, 16 points: “After running through the gauntlet to begin the season, they might be able to waltz into the national championship game if they win out.” – Cheng Sio, CU:I co-sports editor

No. 9 LSU, 5-1, 15 points: “Their schedule is pretty easy from here on out, but they do have a date with the Crimson Tide looming.” – Ryan Callahan, staff writer

No. 10 (tie) TCU, 6-0, 7 points: “If, for some reason, Boise State isn’t going to crash the BCS party, then why not the Horned Frogs?” – Sio

No. 10 (tie) Oregon, 5-1, 7 points: “Oregon gets the slight nod at No. 10 because of quality wins over Utah and Cal.” – Starcer
