Halloween dress up tips for the low-on-cash

Picking the perfect costume for Halloween – one that’s creative and unique – can often be the highlight of the holiday.

Every year costume stores sell expensive disguises that have been seen year after year for increasingly higher prices. To avoid spending money at stores, some students make their own costumes.

“My coolest costume was a penguin,” said Amy Fisher, 21, a senior psychology major. “It’s cool and I hand made it.”

Since not all students have time to sew a costume, some choose to buy creative costumes that are available for purchase.

“I have one of the cow suits with the cool utters,” said Bradley Frazier, 20, a sophomore integrative physiology major. “It also has a cowbell necklace.”

Students who want a cheap, unique and not-too-difficult-to-make costume just need a little creativity and planning.

Here are some costume ideas from Costume Idea Zone:

iPod Commercial

Dress in all black from head to toe and use black face and body paint on whatever cannot be covered in black clothing. Then simply carry around an iPod and dance around.

Table for One

Put a round cardboard circle around the shoulders with room for a head. Cover the cardboard in a tablecloth and other accessories to compliment the table (paper dishes, plastic silverware, etc.) and create a hat that would work as a centerpiece.

Q-tip

Begin by wearing a giant white wig or else add spray-on hair dye. Then wrap around in blue plastic wrap and add cotton balls all over the shoes.

Chick Magnet

This one is simple, especially for anyone who still has Barbie dolls.

Simply dress in black and attach Barbie dolls all over the clothes.

Twister

This look can be achieved two ways. The first way is simply cut up an old Twister game board and wear it.

Another way is to cut out colored felt circles and glue or pin them to a white T-shirt.

Dinner is on me

For those who want a costume for very little money, simply dress in all black and glue or tape real or fake food to the clothing.

Mona Lisa

Dress in all black and wear a long black wig. Cut out a picture frame from a cardboard box or else use a real picture frame and carry it around.

Periodically hold up the frame and give a slight mysterious smile.
