Student being treated for head injuries following a group assault

A 22-year-old CU student is being treated at a New York hospital for serious brain injuries related to a street brawl that happened over a month ago on the Hill.

Evan Couri, a junior economics major, suffered a stroke and an aneurism in the fight, which the Boulder Police Department says included approximately 20 to 40 individuals and yielded three known victims.

Shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, Boulder police were called to the 1000 block of 12th Street on a report of an assault, said Boulder police spokeswoman Julie Brooks. Multiple assaults occurred in the area as a result of a fight between two groups of men who had carried the violent episode over from an argument earlier in the evening at the Walrus Saloon.

Couri was found by police east of the 12th Street and Euclid Avenue intersection. He was unconscious with abrasions to his face, and was transported to the Boulder Community Hospital and released several days later.

Another victim, also a 21-year-old male, was transported privately to the hospital for treatment of a facial laceration. Police could not confirm if weapons had been used in the fight.

On Thursday, the Boulder police arrested 21-year-old Howard Jordan Jacobsen on suspicion of second degree assault in connection with the attack of one of the three victims. Jacobsen was released on bond with his court date to be announced.

Jacobsen, a student at Front Range Community College in Longmont, has denied assaulting anyone.

“This case remains an active investigation assigned to the Major Crime Unit at the Boulder Police Department,” said Brooks. “Throughout this investigation there have been varying levels of cooperation with some witnesses, victims, and suspects.”
