Free self-defense classes offered every month

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Stacy Moore, the Mile High Karate’s Martial Arts director and owner, will be teaching women what to do if they find themselves on their backs in an attack situation.

“I think CU students need it more than anyone else. If I was an attacker I would be more likely to attack someone younger and cuter,” Moore said.

When Moore was younger she was attacked and it affected her life. She said she was afraid of everybody. She started to take karate and slowly became more confident with how to defend herself in that kind of situation.

“I don’t want it to happen to other people, and I want them to believe that if it does they can get over it and their life can get better,” Moore said.

It is important for women to know how to defend themselves because that is what brings confidence, and when you have confidence you are less likely to get assaulted, Moore said.

In the self-defense classes, Moore and others teach students how to be aware of their surroundings and check where their exits are. They also teach students basic self-defense and how to get out of situations when an attacker grabs their victim.

Suzy Ibrahim, 29, has been taking the self-defense class and is also a victim of assault.

“I got more confidence in the fact that I would be able to defend myself in a bad situation. Before I didn’t really believe it because I didn’t know how it was possible for anyone my size to defend herself from a large man,” Ibrahim said. “I learned really easy point-manipulation techniques that show me that is possible to take anyone out.”

After Ibrahim started taking the self-defense classes she thought they should be required for all CU students, and all college students for that matter, due to the fact that a lot of sexual attacks occur on college campuses.

“If women were more prepared maybe things like that wouldn’t happen as often,” Ibrahim said.
