Buffs finish fourth at Arizona Wildcat Invitational

The No. 23 Colorado women’s golf team started its spring season by finishing fourth at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the Vistoso Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.

The Buffaloes finished 41-over-par 905. Host No. 22 University of Arizona finished 13-under-par 851, with No. 1 University of California, Los Angeles 12 strokes behind in second. No. 8 Arizona State University rounded out the top three.

Senior Emily Talley had her second-best finish of the 2011/12 season, tying for 11th at 4-over-par 220. Talley holds a CU record with 25 career top 20 finishes.

Sophomore Alex Stewart finished the invitational tied for 24th at 12-over-par 228.

As the season is kicking into gear, Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said the team has a lot to learn from this tournament.

“This team is better than we showed today and that’s frustrating,” Kelly said to the CU Sports Information Department. “It was a good experience playing with some top ranked teams, but I’m glad we have a quick turnaround and we can get back at it next week.”

Up next for the Buffs is the 2012 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted Feb. 13-15 by Ohio State in Palos Verdes, Calif. The event will be a homecoming for California natives Jenny and Kristin Coleman.

The competition includes three top 10 teams, with all 15 teams ranked in the top 43 nationally.
