CU women’s basketball falls short against ASU

The mild weather in Tempe, Ariz. couldn’t warm up the CU women’s basketball team’s shooting Thursday.

A slow start in the first half proved to be fatal as the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Colorado Buffaloes 64-43.

Against ASU (12-5, 3-3), the Buffs (13-4, 2-4) shot a record low of 12 percent from the floor in the first half, only putting nine points on the board and making only three shots in 25 attempts. From beyond the arc, they did not fare much better, making just one of six.

In contrast, the Sun Devils shot a strong 62 percent in the first half to give themselves a comfortable 42-9 lead at the break.

The Buffs got into their groove in the second half by netting 53.8 percent of their shots.

“We were in a different mindset in the second half,” head coach Linda Lappe said in an interview with the CU Sports Information Department. “I liked how our team didn’t quit. We started to defend and showed a lot of resolve. We kept playing hard and did some good things.”

Despite outscoring ASU 34-22 in the second half, the Buffs couldn’t pull off a win.

CU looks to rebound from this loss when they face the University of Arizona at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.
