ASU scores third touchdown in 4th quarter
Williams caught a 12 yard pass from Jackson on the first play of the fourth quarter, which gave CU a first down. Charles carried for five yards on first down and burst through a hole over the right side for 10 yards on second down, giving the Buffs another first down. Holliday ran over the left tackle for five yards, then Charles, running over the right side, used his speed to get to the outside and rumbled for eight yards on second down. That run put Charles over 100 yards rushing on the day, with 106. Tackle Edwin Harrison was hurt on the play, but was able to walk to the sideline under his own power.
On first down, CU stuck with the run and again gave the ball to Charles, but this time he was hit behind the line of scrimmage after a one yard loss. On second down, Charles gained that yard back, bringing up third and 10. Charles gathered in a screen pass and was hit immedeatly for a loss of three yards. Mason Crosby would enter the game for a 62 yard field goal that came up short, but a running into the kicker penalty moved the ball five yards closer to the uprights. The 57 yard try was long enough, but sailed wide left. The score remained 14-3 after the miss.
Herring carried for six yards on the first play of Arizona State’s drive. An incomplete pass from Carpenter after a holding penalty resulted in third and 10, and Carpenter scrambled for six on the play, but the gain was not good enough for a first down and ASU was forced to punt after going three and out.
CU took over with 8:52 remaining in the game, and Charles dipped, weaved, and spun for three yards on first down. Jackson’s pass intended for DeVree on second down was incomplete after being tipped at the line. Third down saw a good Jackson pass be dropped by Williams, forcing CU to punt yet again. DiLallo’s 41 yard punt was covered well by the Buffs special teams unit, and ASU was stopped for a loss of six on the return.
