Buffs narrowly escape a wider Rams' margin

Rams can’t come up with a touchdown or field goal despite impressive drive

Fourth quarter:

The fourth quarter began with still another wide receiver screen, this one to receiver Luke Roberts. The Rams would eventually find themselves in a third and 6 yards to gain situation.

Hanie ran the option keeper and was stopped inches short of the line to gain for a first down. Colorado State would go for it on fourth and inches, a crucial play in the game, and Hanie appeared to be stopped short on the quarterback sneak by sophomore George Hypolite. However, the spot of the ball gave the Rams a first down and goal to go.

After two plays for no gain, the third and goal play resulted in a false start penalty, pushing the Rams back to the Buffs’ 15-yard line. On third and goal from the 15, Hanie narrowly escaped a sack to find Sperry for a loss of 2 yards, and the Rams sent out their field goal unit. Ram kicker Jason Smith would miss the field goal from 34 yards, giving the Buffs a huge defensive stand keeping the score at 14-10 in favor the Rams. The drive lasted 18 plays and took 9:57 off the clock, but resulted in no points.

The Buffs took the field with Cox at quarterback, and he threw a screen pass to Barnett for 4 yards before giving way to Jackson again, who would lose 3 yards on the next play. On third and 9 from the Buffs’ own 21-yard line, Jackson’s pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage, forcing the Buffs to punt and bring their defense back on the field with 7:45 left in the game.
