Alpha Phi International is continuing their investigations of allegations regarding a potential hazing incident at the Beta Gamma chapter at CU.
During the week of Oct. 11, RAs from a dorm came forward with information of potential hazing that occurred in the residence hall.
The alleged incident included some young women being forced to drink shots of alcohol, CU Spokesperson Bronson Hilliard told the CU Independent in a previous article.
Alpha Phi International, of which CU’s Alpha Phi chapter is a member, released a statement concerning the potential incident.
“Thus far, we believe the incident was isolated to one new member of Alpha Phi who was pressured by other members to drink several shots of alcohol,” Linda Kahangi, executive director of the Alpha Phi International Fraternity said in the statement.
According to the release, those found to be involved in the incident will be dealt with on an individual level and will meet with the organization’s judiciary board. Until these judiciary hearings are complete, investigations will continue.
If the information is found to be true, those involved will be in direct violation of the university’s policy on hazing and will be held accountable through the Office of Student Conduct at CU as well.
Kahangi said that hazing is not allowed at any of their chapters.
“Alpha Phi does not condone hazing in any form, and its Beta Gamma chapter at the University of Colorado is no exception,” Kahangi said in the statement.
CU is also conducting it’s own investigation of the alleged incident, said CU Spokesman Bronson Hilliard.
“We’re still piecing this together,” Hilliard said. “It looked like it might have been a couple of incidents involving this particular sorority and possibly some fraternities, and again, we’re not sure yet. It’s been difficult to piece together because the reports are sketchy and the details are few. We’re trying to get as many details as we can.”
Kahangi said the incident can be a learning opportunity.
“We are proud of the members that have come forward with the facts to ensure that this isolated incident was handled effectively and that the members involved will have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes,” Kahangi said.
