Jonathan Rado and Sam France, the duo that make up Foxygen, have released the first album since last year’s “We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic.” “…And Star Power” finishes off the sentiment, though the new album is more toned down than its predecessor.

While “We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors…” was consistently upbeat, the tempo drops on “…And Star Power.” This isn’t a bad thing by any means, and allows the group to take a more experimental approach to their psych rock.

“How Can You Really” is a clear standout, which explains why it was the first single to be released from the album. With a strong 70s pop influence, the song is sure to be stuck in your head all day.

“Brooklyn Police Station” also packs the jangly pop rock, then slows it down with a hazy, dream-like section serving as the musical equivalent of floating on a cloud.

Tracks like “Wally’s Farm” showcase Foxygen’s abilities to dig in and get a little weird. “Freedom II” acts as a rock ‘n roll boogie, and gives France a chance to let out a few wails that sound spookily similar to Mick Jagger.

“…And Star Power” sees Foxygen delving into other sounds and exploring other influences. The groovy vibes are still present, but the varied song structures hint at a growing maturity for the band.
